Canine Bowen Technique is based on the principles of The Bowen Technique, a human therapy developed by an Australian, Tom Bowen (1916-1982).

In 2001 Bowen therapists Sally & Ron Askew adapted the technique for the use on dogs; they quickly integrated it into their dog behavioural and rehabilitation work and in 2003 founded the European Guild of Canine Bowen Therapists.

Following their retirement in December 2017 the Canine Bowen Technique Association, CBTA, was developed to continue their pioneering work with dogs.

The Canine Bowen Technique (CBT) is a highly effective but gentle, non-invasive, hands on, holistic approach that helps promote pain relief, reduces stress and rebalances your dog. It aims to – support the dog as a whole, rather than the condition presented and is not intended as a substitute for veterinary care but as a complementary therapy. It is suitable for all dogs irrespective of their breed or age.

So how does it work?

The technique works by applying rolling moves, using the thumbs or fingers, over muscle and soft tissue. The moves cause vibration within the muscles, which is in turn detected by the nerve endings and the connective tissue known as Fascia.

This “unraveling” is done layer-by-layer and each individual dog must work at its own pace. A series of short breaks allow the dog time to make the subtle, fine adjustments needed to help rebalance it, helping to relieve tension and reduce pain.
